AARJ Important Upcoming Events: 5/30/24 Avondale Policing Listening session facilitated by TCAPP; 6/13/24 Meet and Greet the SPLC, Call for Art for Juneteenth exhibit by Avondale Arts Alliance. Read below and see attachments for details.

Various AARJ leaders have been in meetings with Avondale Estates police and city leadership over the past 4 years, recommending changes and steps that could be taken to ensure equitable, safe and unbiased policing in our city.   We began meetings under our former Police Chief, continued throughout the navigation of the failed accreditation attempt and through the transition to Chief Hess’ leadership.   Throughout that time, we have advocated for listening sessions with community members and other stakeholders to promote better communication between police, city leadership and the community.  FINALLY, with the help of the organization The Communities and Police Partnership (TCAPP), we are beginning that broader conversation.   The first Listening Session on Policing has been scheduled!  (We apologize for the short notice, but we were not involved in the final date selection and were given a short time-frame to work with.)

An initial meeting will be held on May 30th in the evening to identify on-going concerns regarding policing and to provide positive feedback, as well, about changes that have already been made under Chief Hess.  We have reached out to some of you who have been actively involved in policing discussions and actions over the past few years.  TCAPP is leading this effort and would like to have a diverse group representing a cross-section of stakeholders who are affected by policing — residents, business owners, people who work at or frequent businesses, our school communities, people who commute through Avondale on a daily or frequent basis, immediately neighboring communities, etc.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR ADDITIONAL PARTICIPANTS WHO HAVE FEEDBACK THEY WOULD LIKE TO SHARE REGARDING POLICING IN AVONDALE.   IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN THIS EVENT, PLEASE LET US KNOW ASAP AND WE WILL FORWARD YOUR INFORMATION TO TCAPP’S TEAM WHO WILL BE FACILITATING THE SESSION.

IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND BUT HAVE FEEDBACK ABOUT AE POLICING YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE PASSED ON, PLEASE SHARE THAT, ALSO!  SEVERAL AARJ LEADERS WILL ATTEND THE EVENT AND CAN SHARE YOUR FEEDBACK.

PLEASE EMAIL OR TEXT CAROL CALVERT WITH YOUR INTEREST IN ATTENDING OR FEEDBACK ABOUT POLICING.  THANKS!
