We demand that AE City Government adopt the 21st Century Policing initiative that involves community input and oversight of policing and a community policing model. We are aiming to line the sidewalks on N. Avondale Road from City Hall down to Sam's Crossing. Bring water and masks, and prepare to social distance!

Sign/Poster ideas: To project our theme, consider phrases such as the following

  • "Review and Reform Policing NOW!"

  • "Community Oversight of Police!"

  • "We Demand 21st Century Policing!"

  • "Community Policing Now!"

  • "Demilitarize the Police!",

  • as well as BLM, etc.

Here are some of our specific "asks" for 21st Century Policing Implementation:

BOMC and City Management:

  • Create listening opportunities with the community.

  • Allocate government resources to implementation.

  • Conduct community surveys on attitudes toward policing, and publish the results.

  • Define the terms of civilian oversight to meet the community’s needs.

  • Recognize and address holistically the root causes of crime.

AEPD:

  • Review and update policies, training, and data collection on use of force

  • Increase transparency of data, policies, and procedures.

  • Ensure officers have access to the tools they need to keep them safe.

AE Community:

  • Participate in problem-solving efforts to reduce crime and improve quality of life.

  • Work with local law enforcement to ensure crime-reducing resources and tactics are being deployed

  • Call on state legislators to ensure that the legal framework does not impede accountability for law enforcement.
